The Túnel de la Engaña is located in the mountains north of Santander, a proposed railway line to connect the bay of Biscay with the Mediterranean Sea. The project dates back to the 19th century and construction lasted over 17 years. In 1961 construction was suspended as a result of restrictions by the World bank on public investment in Spain, when it was only 390 m from completion.
In 2014 I visited this area in Northern Spain in 2014, as part of the international workshop in Art, Politics and Architecture directed by Carlos Garaicoa and supported by the Fundacion Botin.
This series of prints documents the abandoned accommodation that housed workers in the early days of construction; some of these were prisoners of the Spanish civil war.
